Berry Pomeroy Castle, Totnes

Berry Pomeroy Castle is a Tudor mansion located near the village of Berry Pomeroy in Totnes of South Devon, England. It was constructed in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family, who had owned the land since the 11th century.

In 1547, the Pomeroy family, facing financial difficulties, sold the lands to Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. The Seymour family built a modest early Elizabethan mansion within the castle's defenses, and later expanded it into a grand house to rival Longleat or Audley End. Apart from a brief period of forfeiture to the Crown after Edward's execution, the castle has been in the possession of the Seymour family ever since, although it was abandoned in the late 17th century when the fourth baronet moved to Wiltshire.

After being in ruins for a century, the castle became a popular tourist attraction in the late 18th century, a status which it retains today. Its reputation as a haunted site, associated with the ghosts known as the White Lady and Blue Lady, has contributed to its popularity. Extensive archaeological excavations were carried out between 1980 and 1996, shedding light on the castle's history and overturning previous beliefs about its age and cause of destruction. An audio tour provides visitors with an immersive experience.
