Lynford Gorge Hiking Trail at Dartmoor

On the western edge of Dartmoor, there's an awesome river gorge you've got to check out! The River Lyd gracefully winds its way through ancient oak woodland, offering visitors a mesmerizing display of natural beauty. Here, the waters of the river plunge, tumble, and swirl, creating a picturesque landscape that has captivated the hearts of adventurers since the Victorian era.

Embarking on a journey into the gorge is an exhilarating and challenging experience. Be prepared for a handful of demanding climbs and some rugged terrain. Sturdy footwear with excellent grip a necessity. Two exciting walking trails await adventurous explorers.

The first leads through the ancient woodland and along a railway, culminating in the majestic 30m-high Whitelady Waterfall. The second trail descends into the deepest part of the gorge, daring visitors to brave the Devil’s Cauldron pothole on a platform perched over the coursing river.

As you venture further, the gorge unveils a hidden treasure – a temperate rainforest, a rarity on a global scale. This unique habitat has earned the gorge a designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), recognized for its remarkable geology, diverse flora, and thriving fauna.
