A Beautiful, Hilly Hike to Castle Drogo & River Teign

Castle Drogo, a 20th-century architectural marvel, stands majestically over the Teign Gorge. Nestled in Drewsteignton, near Exeter, Devon, this masterpiece was crafted by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, making it a must-see for any history or architecture enthusiast.

The journey to Castle Drogo was a delightful mix of beauty and challenge. Embarking in the early afternoon, our goal was to explore the castle. We parked at Fingle Woods and crossed the road to start our ascent on the nearby trail. The trail, 4.7km with its initial steep climb and a final elevation of around 250m, offered a satisfying initial physical challenge that was balanced by the stunning scenery.

Upon arriving, we headed straight to the cafe, a bit peckish. While finishing our meals at the castle’s cafe, we realized that the castle viewings would be closed a few minutes later. In light of that, we decided to call it a day and continued along the trail alongside the beautiful River Teign. This eventually led us to Fingle Bridge, but the car wasn’t much further.

Nevertheless, it was a nice afternoon adventure and we will definitely visit Castle Drogo another time. Here’s a photo and video clips collection of our hike.
