About Peckover House

Peckover House, a classic Georgian merchant's townhouse built in 1722, served as the residence of the Peckover family for 150 years. Despite their simple Quaker lifestyle, the family successfully operated a private bank, a facet that is on display during guided tours of the house and while strolling through the gardens.

The Victorian-style walled garden is renowned for its diverse rose varieties and a stunning orangery housing ancient orange trees, all set within a spacious 0.8-hectare (2-acre) grounds. Admission to the garden is free during the open season.

Following our garden visit, we relaxed at the cozy Reed Barn tea room, housed in a 17th-century thatched barn within the garden. It is open seasonally and offers an array of hot and cold drinks, along with delectable cakes and light bites.

We also explored the banking hall, which, despite partial demolition in the 1870s, still showcases parts of its original structure. The surviving sections now host an exhibition space relating to the history of the Peckovers' banking business.
